Healing Waters: The Spiritual and Therapeutic Benefits of Bathing

Updated: May 25

In many cultures and traditions, water has long been associated with cleansing, renewal, and healing. Bathing offers physical relaxation, healing, and a spiritual dimension involving purification, rejuvenation, and well-being.

I have served nine years in the Marine Corps. I gave birth to three beautiful children, nurtured myself back to standards without a trainer, and overcame many challenging workout sessions. One of my secrets is that baths are a part of my lifestyle. I take them whenever my body calls for one. I use them to remove negative energy from the body, meditate, and heal. Here are some ingredients that I include in my baths besides foaming soap (my bubbles are a must):

A bathtub filled with healing elements serves as a soothing sanctuary, reminding us of the power of spiritual baths to cleanse the mind and soul.

Herbs: Different herbs provide various benefits in herbal baths. Lavender has relaxing and calming properties, peppermint relieves muscle aches and pains, and cinnamon sticks promote relaxation and skin health. You can use dried herbs, fresh herbs, or bath tea bags.

Flowers: I use flowers in my baths because I love the fragrance; they change the water's color, making me feel happy.

Carrier oils: I buy multiple oils and mix them (olive, almond, avocado, flaxseed, vitamin E, black castor, babassu, and coconut). Essential oils are very potent and should not be added directly to bathwater. Adding carrier oils prevents skin drying and increases softness during baths.

Essential oils: Choose an essential oil that suits your needs or preferences. It's also important to use essential oils in moderation. My favorite five are frankincense, rose, grapefruit, bergamot, and vanilla.

Epsom salt: Epsom salt, also known as magnesium sulfate, is a popular bath additive known for its potential therapeutic benefits. It offers several advantages, including muscle relaxation, stress reduction, and skin health.

If you want to be fancy, add honey, oatmeal, and milk. Before using these ingredients, test a small area of your skin to ensure you don't have any adverse reactions, especially if you have allergies or sensitivities.

Remember to set your intentions! Setting your intentions before bathing can help you focus your mind and create a more mindful and purposeful bathing experience. Whether for meditation, energy clearing, or just pure relaxation, intention setting can enhance the spiritual aspect of your baths.
